Molasses Chews

I loved taffy as a kid. The flavors are endless and they were a fun little treat! I've never thought about making taffy at home, but when I saw this recipe I had to give it a try. Molasses wouldn't usually be my first pick for something like this, I'm a sucker for sweets, but these are quite tasty and are a nice change from the typical sweet treats.

Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup molasses (170g)
  • 1 1/2 cup sugar (306g)
  • 1 1/2 tbsp vinegar (21g)
  • 1/2 cup water (105g)
  • 1/4 tsp cream of tartar
  • 1/4 cup butter (56g)
  • 1/8 tsp baking soda
Instructions
  1. In a heavy saucepan, combine molasses, sugar, vinegar and water. Using a candy thermometer, cook the mixture on medium heat until it reaches 255 degrees.
  2. Remove from heat and add butter, cream of tartar and baking soda. Mix until well combined.
  3. Pour mixture into a buttered dish.
  4. When cool enough to handle, pull pieces of taffy until light in color and shiny. Butter your hand before and during pulling as needed to stop sticking to hands.
  5. Twist and cut into 1 inch pieces. Wrap in parchment paper.
